98 Shades of Gray

First, everyone pick yourselves up out of the gutter. This is not my take on soft porn literature or “how to” guide on getting laid. This is about the truth or how we all see what is true.

Let’s start with that age old saying “that the truth is never black or white, it’s somewhere in between.” What lies between black and white is varying shades of gray. What I’m saying is there is a value scale of truth between 1 and 100, 1 being black and 100 being white. In between there are 98 different shades of gray, and, for the most part, that is where the truth lies.  Black and white do not represent good or evil, right or wrong, one side or the other. They represent 2 sides to every issue, when there are actually more than 2 sides, there’s the middle ground where most things need to be decided. That’s called compromise and that’s what gray represents.

The major problem is that too many people only see things as black or white. Where there’s war, black and white. Where there’s political discord, black and white. Where there’s religion, taxes, politics, class warfare, abortion, gun control…where there’s disagreement over social issues, black and white.

I believe we live in world of gray where almost no truth is absolute. Unfortunately, when it comes to issues that plague our society it’s the lunatic fringe – the 1s and the 100s – that define the discussion and eventually destroy any hope for progress. Every day brings a new battle between the 2 parties that govern our country, a new event that brings out the fringes on both sides of the social issues that plaque our nation and our world, and a seemingly endless parade of lunatics on both sides of any battle spewing their venom for their fellow 1s and 100s. I’m sure all this makes them feel like they are making the world a better place. The reality is they are just making us more divided, which just makes me blue when all I really want is to live in a world of grays.

About IraSez

I am the owner of Monarch Communications, a graphic design/advertising/website design firm in Millburn, NJ. You can take a look at some of our work at www.MonComInc.com I started IraSez at the urging of my wife, a couple of friends and several facebook friends who actually encouraged me to write a book. They think I'm funny but some of my latest blogs have covered some rather somber topics. In my spare time, I run the local SU alumni club. I'm in the 9th year of a 3 year term or as us SU grads called "fuzzy math." I'm SU '82, wife is SU '83, daughter is SU '11, son is SU '14, even my nephew goes to SU. So yes, we bleed Orange. I like to play golf, watch the same movies over and over, and take long walks with my dog on the trails in South Mountain Reservation behind Old Short Hills. If you see a guy wearing something with an SU logo chasing after a dog named Cosmo, that's me!
